It should be noted, that the New York City Fire Department was not involved in providing  public ambulance service to New Yorkers until their merger with The New York City Emergency Medical Service in 1996. Up to this time, ambulances such as the unit described above, only existed to treat and transport firefighters injured at the scenes of fires and MCI's.
